Will (that’s him in the blue beanie) has been training as a Street Socceroo for 13 months now and says it is the only thing he looks forward to each week.
“When you live on the streets there is not much to do, and I really love sport. I played AFL football for nine years and actually hated soccer but now I like it more than footy. Okay, I am a Kangaroos supporter however I also support Adelaide United in the A-League”.
Will cites the best part of the program is playing the matches at the end of training and he is really looking forward to the soccer pitch being built. “I am keen to make the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup team and it has been my goal from last year. I believe the key to making the team is keeping up my attendance and making sure I am improving my skills.” With the second site in Adelaide about to go live Will is pretty excited. “I will most probably travel to Port-Adelaide Enfield and train there as well each week.“
Will is currently staying at a backpackers and says he doesn’t use drugs or drink alcohol anymore and is trying to give up cigarettes in the lead up to the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup. “If I make it to the National Championships in July in Melbourne I really want to do a tour of the MCG”.
When asked what else he could tell me about himself Will said “I am currently doing a few courses; fork lift driving, warehousing and I really like Hip Hop music”.
Will was selected to represent Australia at the National Championships in 2007.
