Police 2On Wednesday August 6th, the Melbourne City Fire Department, the Victoria Police and Victoria Metro’s street soccer team played a round robin street soccer tournament to help raise awareness of homelessness.

The beautiful weather and friendly competition combined to make for a great afternoon of soccer.

Vic Metro and the Victoria Police faced off in the tournament final. The Victoria Police proved the consistency of their strong offence. However, Vic Metro was able to erect a virtual brick wall of defensive players, breaking down numerous attacks. Still, a powerful defence was simply not enough for Vic Metro as the Victoria Police kicked their way to a 6-1 victory, making them the final victors.

At the day’s conclusion, the Victoria Police and Melbourne City Fire Department were presented with chocolates to thank them for their participation. Stefan, from Vic Metro’s street soccer team, was awarded player-of-the-day. Special thanks also go to Steve for refereeing the matches.

Senior Sergeant Ron Sinclair, President of the Victoria Police Soccer Club said that soccer matches like these gave police an opportunity to break down the perceived barriers between police and the community.

“The Victoria Police soccer club is thrilled to be participating in this tournament,” he said.

“Victoria Police Soccer club are always keen to participate in events with different community groups and this is certainly an opportunity to interact with members of the community in a different environment. Victoria Police Soccer Club members look forward to assisting the Street Socceroos in any way they can in the lead up to the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup.”
