Come and try day kick starts Bunbury Street soccer initiative

Bunbury’s new community street soccer program for homeless and marginalised people is held its first “come and try” day from 3:30pm – 5.30 pm on Tuesday, November 18.

And no-one needed to be a soccer star to join in. Men and women of all ages and ability were invited to get down to The Recreation Ground in Bunbury, for a fun kick around.

Run by street magazine The Big Issue, the street soccer program gets together people who are homeless or marginalised for weekly training and matches.

The program uses physical activity as a catalyst for transforming lives, by reconnecting people with the community and providing them with a sense of purpose and belonging.

Recently appointed coach, Giuliano Cantoni, says the program is about having fun and getting some physical activity in a team environment.

“It’s all about getting out there, building confidence, making new friends and having something to look forward to each week. A healthy body will help lead to a healthy mind, “ Mr Cantoni said.

“It’s also a chance for people to feel part of the community and hopefully they will enjoy it and spread the word.

“You don’t need experience or skills to have a go – all we want is for people to come down, have a bit of fun and do something positive.”

Weekly training offers people who have experienced homelessness, substance abuse or disadvantage, the opportunity to get fit, make new friends and seek support and advice.

Support staff work closely with the players, linking them to services that address their homelessness, substance abuse, family breakdown and mental illness.

The Big Issue Street Soccer Program is supported by a grant from the Australian Government. Bunbury is one of 30 sites around Australia to receive the program.

Participants who show the greatest commitment to the weekly training sessions and commit to making positive changes in their lives have the chance to represent Australia as Street Socceroos at the annual international Homeless World Cup. This year the Homeless World Cup will kick off in Melbourne from December 1-7.

Training will be held each Tuesday from 3:30 – 5:30pm at The Recreation Centre, Symmons Street, Bunbury.
