Coach GeorgeNational Coach George Halkias has selected eight homeless and marginalised people from across the country to have the honour of representing Australia as Street Socceroos at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup.

Players have been selected from amongst hundreds of participants involved in a weekly street soccer program coordinated by The Big Issue. The ongoing National Street Soccer Program is supported by a grant from the Federal Government and is being expanded to 30 locations around Australia. The national program uses sport as a catalyst for transforming lives, by reconnecting homeless and marginalised people with the community and working to rebuild players’ confidence and self-esteem.

Selection for the Australian team is based not just on soccer skills alone, but on the dedication, passion and commitment players have demonstrated in making positive changes in their lives. George received the coach’s award in Copenhagen last year for his fair and supportive approach.

Congratulations to all members of the Street Socceroos on their achievements!
