mel_smallLike any really good idea, The Big Issue magazine has spread – globally. Since 1994, when the first Big Issue appeared on the streets of London, around 11 different Big Issue magazines have sprung into existence – each with a unique regional flavour.

The Australian Big Issue Deputy Editor Melissa Cranenburgh recently got to see how the Big Issue worked in Japan, when she visited the magazine’s offices in Tokyo.

Melissa’s visit highlights included stretching her tourist Japanese to the limit for the amusement of vendors (including ‘Ono-san’, ‘Koshizawa-san’ and ‘Hirose-san’) and attending an inaugural vendor coaching session designed to help vendors improve their sales approach. The Big Issue Japan is produced in Osaka.
