Shoesday Tuesday

Posted Aug 17th, 2008 • Category: Big Issue News • By Anna O'Brien

Are you brave enough to sleep in your shoes?

Many homeless people do not take their shoes off.

Keeping their shoes on at all times means they are ready to move quickly.
Keeping their shoes on keeps their feet warm.
Keeping their shoes on means they aren’t stolen.

To understand a fraction of the hardship homeless people endure, school children are being challenged to think homeless for a day and elect to keep their shoes on for 24 hours on Tuesday August 19th 2008.

Shoesday Tuesday is an awareness campaign and fundraiser, an opportunity to talk about the issue of homelessness. Money raised will go towards the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup, an international Street Soccer tournament The Big Issue is hosting on the 1-7 December 2008.

Steps for Shoesday Tuesday

  • Tell my friends about Shoesday Tuesday and get everyone in my class signed up.
  • Think about how I will collect money – cash and/or online (see below for instructions).
  • Set my fundraising target and watch it grow.
  • Ask my family and friends to donate.
  • Choose which shoes I will wear on the day (Tuesday August 19th) and put on my red shoelaces (remember you may have PE class or sport practice). You can buy red shoe laces in packs of ten here for $30 including postage. This button will take you to a paypal page- you’ll need a parent.

  • Put a notice on my school website, in bulletins, give an assembly and join the myspace and facebook group.
  • During Shoesday Tuesday take photos of me and my friends with our shoes on.
  • Remind my family I will be sleeping in my shoes (warning: I might not be taking a shower either!) - I’ve signed up for 24 hours.
  • Send my photos and stories about the experience to: shoesdaytuesday@bigissue.org.au
