Our Magazine
The Big Issue is a national magazine that publishes quality articles and images on a range of subjects including arts and entertainment, current affairs, street culture and lifestyle.
The Big Issue is an independent magazine committed to all forms of social justice.
We tackle big subjects, but always retain a sense of humour and a primary interest in how people are affected.
The magazine is a good read and a good deed, as it is sold on the streets by vendors who keep half the cover price.

Roving Eye Photo Essays
Seen through the photographer’s eye, the human spirit can spring to life and triumph in remarkable circumstances. ‘Roving Eye’ is a regular feature that captures the social and salient art of photography.
Illustrators’ Gallery
Amid the hard-hitting articles and feel-good features of The Big Issue, our illustrators shine. We take great pride in out loyal stable of award-winning artists, and their unique ability to add a twist to every story they illustrate.
Vendor Profiles
Step into the shoes of some of our vendors. Find out how they’ve come to be where they are and what keeps them going.
Vendor Writings
It’s the voice coming up from the streets; the hopes, dreams and insights of Big Issue vendors in their own words and pictures. Fiction, poetry and memoirs written by vendors are published each issue in ‘Street Sheet’. All contributors are paid for their work.
Ear2Ground
Overheard a tantalising titbit? Share it with the world! Join our network of eavesdroppers by emailing the snippets of conversation that prick up your ears. Ear2Ground appears in ‘Hearsay’, the fortnightly review of quotable quotes from across the globe.
Your Say
If there’s a particular issue on your mind, or you’ve read something poignant, hilarious or irritating in The Big Issue and feel like sharing, write a letter to the editor. Each issue one contribution is picked as ‘Letter of the Fortnight’ - and the writer wins a prize.
Letters must be 200 words or less, contain the writer’s full name and home address, and may be edited for clarity or space.
Contribute
The Big Issue publishes articles, illustrations and photographs on all sorts of subjects and welcomes submissions from freelance contributors. But before sending your work, read The Big Issue (a lot!) to get an idea of the stuff we publish. Then follow our contributor guidelines.

A fortnight’s worth of discourse delivered to your door – fresh and ready to devour. In an ideal world, everyone would buy The Big Issue from a regular vendor, but some schools, libraries and individuals in regional areas might find it easier to subscribe. We are committed to helping the homeless break the poverty cycle, so you can be sure the money from subscriptions still goes into the magazine and Big Issue programs.
